A new version — nothing moved. Bars, lengths and rehearsal letters are exactly where they were, so a part printed for the last version still fits. The recordings have been cut again, with the voice a little quieter.

A letter sometimes carries more than its name, and what it carries is the difference between reading and listening.

OPEN marks a passage that repeats, open-endedly, for as long as Roberto wants it. END is where it closes.

C:OPEN · D · E:END

repeats from C to E. D is inside it, still there and still counted — a landmark within the repeat, not a way out of it. si ripete da C a E. D sta dentro, c’è ancora e si conta ancora — un punto di riferimento dentro la ripetizione, non una via d’uscita.

What follows in brackets says who plays over it. (ts) is the tenor: Ciò che segue fra parentesi dice chi suona sopra. (ts) è il tenore:

G:OPEN(ts) · H:END

— an open repeat from G to H with a tenor solo across it, and the rest of us around it.

Roberto ends it by hand. Two signs — not part of the chironomy, which is for the passages that are not written at all.

Nobody has played this. Every note comes from the notation: Dorico plays the score through NotePerformer, and the sung line through CANTAI. Pitches, rhythms, tempi, dynamics and articulation are all followed, and followed literally — what you hear is the score read by a machine, not a performance of it.

How to use this — the voice, the loops, the letters, the keys Come si usa — la voce, i giri, le lettere, i tasti

The voice is CANTAI synthesis, not Angela — the notes of the line, not a reading of it.

The letters under a playing movement are the rehearsal marks — tap one to go there. To loop the passage you are in, press the button carrying its letter, ↻ C: it goes back to C and repeats up to the next letter. For any other stretch, press the plain ↻ where it should begin and again where it should end; set from two letters, the loop names itself C–E. It repeats until you press it a third time. Every loop you make is kept under its movement — tap one to go back to it, × to forget it. While something is playing: space to pause, ← → for ten seconds, L for the loop, S for the passage you are in, M to show the music, ⇧M to swap between your part and the score, P for the paper — dark, cream or plain black on white — and B to show or hide the cursor.

The archive unpacks into its own folder, named for the version it came from — and single movements carry the same label, so two versions of one movement never collide in your downloads.

Starting a movement from the beginning gives you a count-in — silent, since the click is yours to switch off, and in the movement's own metre and tempo: five slow beats for Der Klare, because that is what its first bar is. Only from the top; going to a letter, resuming, or looping needs no counting into. Press ▶ again to go straight in, space to stop it.

As it is sung Come si canta

Syllabified from the score, with the phonetic transcription beside it. The complete poems and translations are in the teatro.

These transcriptions are machine-generated, with two vowel lengths corrected here — Armut is ˈʔaːɐ̯-muːt, and gieb is ɡiːp, the imperative of geben, long. They have not yet been checked by a German-speaking singer. They are going into the score, so they will be what everyone sings — worth an hour of someone’s ear first. Where the score and the printed poem differ, the score wins: sing what is written.

der kam und lebte wie ein junges Jahr;
der braune Bruder deiner Nachtigallen,
in dem ein Wundern und ein Wohlgefallen
und ein Entzücken an der Erde war …

O wo ist er, der Klare, hingeklungen?
Was fühlen ihn, den Jubelnden und Jungen,
die Armen, welche harren, nicht von fern?
Was steigt er nicht in ihre Dämmerungen —
der Armut großer Abendstern.

English Italiano

O where is he who out of goods and time
grew so strong into his great poverty
that he laid his clothes aside in the market place
and walked bare before the bishop’s robe.
The most inward and most loving of them all,
who came and lived the way a young year lives;
the brown brother of your nightingales,
in whom there was a wondering and a gladness
and a delight in the earth …

O where has he sounded away to, the clear one?
Why do they not feel him, the jubilant, the young —
the poor, who go on waiting — not even from afar?
Why does he not rise into their dusk —
poverty’s great evening star.
che venne e visse come un anno giovane;

darin du mich so eilen siehst.
Ich bin ein Baum vor meinem Hintergrunde,
ich bin nur einer meiner vielen Munde
und jener, welcher sich am frühsten schließt.

Ich bin die Ruhe zwischen zweien Tönen,
die sich nur schlecht aneinander gewöhnen:
denn der Ton Tod will sich erhöhn —

Aber im dunklen Intervall versöhnen
sich beide zitternd.
Und das Lied bleibt schön.

EnglishItaliano

My life is not this steep hour
in which you see me hurrying so.
I am a tree before my own background,
I am only one of my many mouths,
and the one that closes earliest.

I am the stillness between two notes
that take badly to one another:
for the note death wants to rise —

But in the dark interval the two
are reconciled, trembling.
And the song stays beautiful.

What your part cannot show you Quel che la tua parte non può mostrarti

Dear all, Cari tutti,

I am very glad that before long we shall see one another again for a new production. I have worked a great deal these last months and the music is now practically finished. There may be small changes, but you now have the parts available on the site and in the “camerino”, thanks to the work of Michael, whom I thank. sono molto felice che tra poco ci rivedremo per una nuova produzione.

The music seems simple but, as happens with simple things, they are sometimes more complex than the ones that look difficult, and we shall have to take great care over intonation and over dynamics, because there are several delicate places.

As to the form, I took Saint Francis’s Cantico delle Creature and divided it into its subjects — water, wind, sun, moon… and between these I have set poems by Rilke from the Book of Hours, a text of Saint Clare which will be spoken by an actor, a fragment of the Bible, and an invocation to God by Francis, in Latin.

If there are changes in the parts I shall keep you up to date each time, but it mattered to me that you could begin to enter into the work.

For any problem with the parts or anything else, get in touch with me. Per qualsiasi problema nelle parti o altro contattatemi.

un abbraccio Roberto
