The signsI segni

How Roberto conducts what is not written down: 44 signs, given with the hands.

Chironomy is the old name for conducting by hand. In the Middle Ages it meant shaping a plainchant in the air — the hand tracing the rise and fall of a melody for singers who had no score to read. The word is seven hundred years older than the baton, and roughly as old as Francis.

Roberto Bonati took the name for his own practice, in which an orchestra plays music that has not been composed in advance: it arises between his gestures and what each musician does with them. He calls it improvised chironomy — his term, chosen out of respect for the one Butch Morris registered for the same territory, conduction.

Morris is the source he names first. Walter Thompson’s Soundpainting is the second. From there Bonati departed from some of Morris’s gestures and went on adding his own — sometimes, he says, inventing them during the performance. So this list is not a standard being followed. It is a language in use, and it is his.

What is improvised is not the chironomy. The signs below are fixed, and one could conduct a written piece with them. It is the music that is improvised, and his own heading says so exactly: signs for directing an improvisation. That is also the difference from the medieval practice — there the hand followed a melody everyone already knew, and here it shapes one that does not exist yet.

These are not the only signs he gives. Written music has its own few — a fist to leave an open repeat, five fingers to announce a cue before it is counted in — and they are a different set for a different situation: not what to play, but where you are. They are in the camerino, beside the parts they belong to.Non sono i soli segni che dà.

The vocabularyIl vocabolario

Grouped by how they are madeRaggruppati per come si fanno

Not by what they ask for. 44 signs is a great many to learn; six families is not — and the families are his own: the hand makes a letter, or touches a place on the head, or the arm becomes a scale.

Twelve of these signs are movements rather than shapes, and those twelve are drawn moving. The drawings are not hands: a line is an arm, a dot is a hand, and what they show is the shape of the movement — the part his words carry least well. The look of the gesture is not claimed, only its path. The other thirty-two are still, because they are still: a letter, a place touched, a direction pointed.

Each sign is drawn twice over: first what makes it — one hand, both hands, the fingers, the arm, or a place on the body — and then what that part does. It is the order his own descriptions use. “The index finger of the left hand touches the lips” names the finger before the touching, and a player watching from across a room takes them in the same way.

The head is drawn in profile, because the forehead and the nape are the same point on a face seen from the front, and this vocabulary uses both. Two signs have no figure at all: nobody wrote down how they are made, so nothing is shown rather than something invented.
